Thyroid Function Tests in Patients With Chronic Liver Diseases

Abstract
To evaluate thyroid function in patients with chronic liver diseases, thyroid function tests including serum T3, T4 and TSH were measured in 16 patients with chronic hepatitis, in 29 patients with liver cirrhosis and in 15 healthy control group. In chronic hepatitis group, serum level of T3, T4 and TSH were in normal range in compaision with those of control group. The serum level of T3 in patients with liver cirrhosis, however, was significantly lower than those of chronic hepatitis and of control groups. The serum level of T4 and TSH in this group were in normal range. Since the level of serum T3 were not correlated with serum transaminase level, the present data indicate that the reduced level of serum T3 observed in patients with liver cirrhosis appear to relate with the severity of systemic dysfunction of the liver, but not with the severity of liver cell inflammation observed in chronic hepatitis.
